On 2 – 3 December 2020, the British Embassy in Hanoi collaborated with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and EVN’s National Power Transmission (NPT) to organise the ‘Digital Modelling’ workshop and ‘Operation of the Power Transmission System with High Penetration of Renewable Energy’.

Over 100 energy and electricity specialists from EVN and EVN NPT attended the two workshops, discussing with UK experts key technical challenges when operating a power system and managing increased penetration of renewable energy, as well as exploring opportunities to use technologies effectively in order to manage and mitigate these challenges. UK experts, including Mr. Mike Edge from Shire Oak International, also outlined the regulatory, policy, and technical approach taken in the UK to help manage challenges associated with increasing renewable energy on the transmission system.

Vietnam has significant potential for renewable energy, particularly solar and wind. The Government has demonstrated a high level of ambition to increase renewable energy capacity to about 20% of the total primary energy supply by 2030. It is therefore critical for Vietnam to increase the capacity of its power transmission system, and develop a robust regulatory framework for the electricity system operator, as well as meaningful investment in technologies.

Speaking at the workshops, the British Ambassador to Vietnam H.E Mr. Gareth Ward said:

“Renewable energy is a priority sector for the UK in Vietnam, so I am very pleased to see Vietnam’s ambitions to transition toward greater use of renewable energy”.

“In the UK, renewable energy has contributed to electricity generation since the mid-1990s. In 2019 renewable production generated 37.9% of the total electricity mix. Technological innovation has been key to achieving that success”.

“I am delighted to see that UK businesses are investing in solar and wind in Vietnam. Cooperation between UK and Vietnam specialists, bringing technological innovation to improve the operation of the transmission system, will help address the grid connection challenges that both the grid operator and the power generators are facing. I am confident that Vietnam is well-positioned to meet the country’s ambitious target to increase renewables to 15-20% by 2030”.

These workshops form part of the UK’s energy programme to support Vietnam’s renewable transition, following the MOU signed between the UK and Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade earlier this year
